Terminally Ill Man Surprised with Acts of Kindness from Reddit

Scott Widak has Down syndrome and terminal liver disease. At the age of 47 he is at home with his 85 year old mother, who is providing at home hospice care for her son. They recently received an amazing gift; letters, keepsakes, and healing words from complete strangers.
His nephew, Sean O’Connor had turned to reddit, and asked the community if anyone would be interested in sending his uncle a letter. When he received over 1000 responses, O’Connor added Widak’s address along with a list of interests, like Macho man and Johnny Cash. The result was hundreds of letters from every corner, from Australia to Mexico to Japan.
In addition to the letters, the family received art, DVD’s, art supplies, and keepsakes for Widak. Sony even pitched in, sending Widak over a dozen Johnny Cash CDs and DVDs.
“The mail that’s arrived has all been extremely positive and thoughtful,” says O’Connor. “My family and I are amazed at how so many strangers could come together for a random act of kindness.”
